Pilar De La Hoz:
Sergio Valdeos (guitar)
Edwar Perez (contrabaja)
Alex Sarrin (drums)
Juan Medrano Cotito (cajon drums).
Pilar de la Hoz is a vocalist of exceptional talent. Her style is similar to Susana Baca, but with a jazzier flavor and strong Afro roots. Jazz Con Sabor Peruano is a rich mix of traditional Peruvian music with classic and contemporary jazz.
Jazz — in Spanish — from Peru ? Surely not ? Don’t Peruvians only produce Andean music on bamboo panpipes and quena flutes, Afro-Peruvian dance sounds to the tune of cajón box, or chicha dance music?
· Pilar de la Hoz puts paid to the idea that Latin Americans, outside Brazil, don’t sing jazz — blending 1960’s Brazilian jazz styles with her Afro-Peruvian roots — and backed here by great musicians, including guitarist Sergio Valdeos and cajón box maestro Juan Medrano Cotito, members of Susana Baca’s band.
· Born in Lima in 1960 to a musical family, she grew up on a musical diet of jazz, bossa nova, tangos, boleros, Peruvian waltzes and pop music. She was as influenced by Brazil's Elís Regina, Nara Leao, & Leny Andrade as she was by Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Barbara Streisand.
· At sixteen she joined the well-known group Bossa 9 — releasing the album “Canta Brasil!” in 1991. Pilar de la Hoz’s international reputation has led her to work with Brazil’s Joyce & Roberto Menescal and Argentina’s Luís Salinas. She also has her own radio show and appeared at the Tom Jobim anniversary concerts in 2004.
